circa 500 - 450 BC

Width: 17.2 cm

Provenance:

Nostell Priory Collection, Yorkshire, acquired by Charles Winn (1795-1874) in the 19th century

Christie's, London, Greek and Etruscan Vases from Nostell Priory, 30 April 1975, lot 4

Of elegant form, this vessel is characterised by its very glossy black-glaze covering virtually the entire surface, including the stemmed foot, leaving just the rim of the foot in reserve.

Kylikes were primarily used as vessels for drinking wine, most likely at a symposium or all male 'drinking party'.

There is a similar example in the Yale University Art Gallery, accession no. 1913.415.
