A Greek black-glazed Gnathian ware pottery pyxis South Italian, circa 4th century BC
Height: 14.4 cm
Provenance: UK private collection, North-West England, acquired on the London art market in the 1970s to 2000
The lidded vase is of spherical form with a ribbed black-glazed semi-circular body and a matching semi-circular lid surmounted with a raised knob handle. The body is set on a ridged foot. The pyxis is decorated throughout with groups of white and red painted bands.
The pyxis (pl. pyxides) is a small round box, probably used for storing trinkets, ointments or cosmetics. Gnathian pottery was the work of Greek vase-painters from Apulia in South Italy. In this technique, the entire surface of the vessel is painted black, then decorative motifs were applied in added colours.
