A Greek black-glazed pottery kantharos

Circa 5th - 4th century BC

Height: 17 cm (width: 23.5 cm)

Provenance: Norri collection, Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire, UK, 1980s-1990s.

The drinking cup is set on a short stemmed foot with high arching handles.

Largely widespread in Boeotia, a region especially famous for the cult of Dionysos (in which this form probably originated), this vessel is a major attribute of the god of wine: many contemporary painted scenes indeed represent Dionysos celebrating with his retinue of satyrs and maenads.
